Avocado oligonychus, Oligonychus perseae (Acari;Tetranychidae)

Biology

The avocado tetrapod is a new pest of this crop with a wide range of hosts (e.g. carob, various ornamentals).

Symptoms

It feeds mainly on the lower leaf surface along the central nerve and main veins of the leaf, protected under the leaf tissue, thus creating characteristic brownish necrotic spots (1-1.5mm2) on the leaves. Large populations (500 individuals/leaf) can cause leaf drop, burns on the fruit and subsequent fruit loss. It does not move long distances, only to adjacent trees. Probably occurs in summer and autumn.

Manage

This enemy seems to have settled in aboveground areas in the Zounaki and Galata region. The project will attempt to control it biologically.

Area of observation

It was observed on individual avocado trees (young and large) in the area of Vamvakopoulou, Stalos, Galata and Pelekapina.
