Mediterranean fly, Ceratitis capitata Wiedenmann (Diptera; Tephritidae)

Biology

The Mediterranean fly is a highly polyphagous insect as its larvae grow on a wide range of hosts (citrus fruits, apples, pomegranates, tropical fruits, figs, grapes, etc.). The presence of this insect has been observed as an adult on avocado fruits, on sticky yellow traps and as a larvae on infected fruits of over-ripe avocados.

Symptoms

The larvae of the medfly feed on the flesh of the overripe fruit until they complete their development and apart from the quality damage, they cause fruit drop of the affected fruit.

Manage

Harvest the fruit at the "right time" and not later. It is not considered an enemy of economic importance.

Area of observation

In all the avocado fields.
