Agricultural Cooperative of producers of Organic products of Chania
(SYNBIO) (https://biocoop.gr) was set up by the producers in 2006.
It includes 130 members with citrus and avocado crops and an annual turnover of about 100,000 euros.
The scope of activity of Agr.
The Association of Organic Producers is active in the marketing of agricultural products (mainly citrus fruits and avocados) and the distribution of propagating material imported from Spain on behalf of its members (mainly avocados and tropical plants): Mango, Lichi, Cherimoya, Carambola, Zapote, etc.).
The cooperative started marketing, in 2007 with exports of Avocados and Citrus to France and then to Germany until the year 2014, as well as to the domestic market. Later, and when it was found that the quantities produced in organic avocados could not meet international needs, the Board of Directors and the General Assembly of the Cooperative decided to temporarily stop exports and to focus on increasing production, by increasing avocado plantings and importing certified propagating material from Spain, with clonal rootstocks that are tolerant to specific diseases and new commercial varieties that do not exist in Greece.
To date, 31 000 avocado seedlings have been imported, including trial and tropical plants.
